Steam On Your Phone or: Adios Productivity

If you are a PC gamer, you probably live on Steam. Valve’s little engine that could has made PC gaming more affordable and overwhelming than ever. I am almost exclusively a PC gamer and as I look at my Steam library I am overwhelmed by the amount of content I own. Steam offers constant sales on games, especially around holidays, and those of us that are always on the go can miss these sales. Now, Steam’s mobile app for smart phones has made its way out of its fledgling beta and into full release. You can chat with friends, browse sales and the full catalog and edit your wish list. Now, on lunch at work, you can blow 50 bucks on a game and have it waiting for you when you get home. It may not be perfect yet, but it seems this is a must have app for PC gamers. Steam Mobile Beta Impressions (Android)

Steam is making its way to the mobile arena on both of the major mobile platforms of the day, iOS and Android. You’ve heard how it looks on iOS, and now, thanks to my friend (and former writer for the site) Austin, you’ll get a chance to hear how it stacks up on an Android device. Read the full story

Steam Mobile Beta Impressions (iOS)

As some of you may know, Valve released their first attempt at a mobile version of their online storefront, Steam.  Potential users are able to download the app for either Android or iOS from their respective marketplace but be forewarned, this is only a beta.  Users are able to enter their names in the beta pool by simply attempting to log in with their steam account but fear not, I’ve been lucky enough to get into the beta and it is good. Steam Goes Mobile

Steam has become one of the most recognizable and respected digital distribution platforms in video games. From its ease of use to its shiny interface, and from its wide selection to its wallet busting sales and deals, PC and Mac gamers, for the most part, love Steam for buying and managing their games, as well as building a community of friends and competitors. Now, nearly a decade after the platform’s initial release, Steam is packing up and going mobile with a Steam Mobile app for iOS and Android devices. Read the full story

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s New Game Mode

Last month, we found out that one of my favorite games, Counter-Strike, was getting a re-release of sorts onto consoles as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Loaded with new maps, updated classic maps from the original game, new game modes, ranked matchmaking, cross-platform play, leaderboards, new weapons, and more, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is going to absolutely kill any free time I may or may not have had available in 2012, and maybe longer. Counter-Strike Returns in CS:GO

I know this will probably lower some opinions of me, but I don’t particularly care for the Half-Life series. The only thing I really appreciate at all about Half-Life is that it served as the base for one of my favorite games of all time: Counter-Strike. Back in a time when I was still on dial-up, I spent many hours (and many dollars) at local LAN/Online game centers playing de_rats, de_dust2, de_pool, and every other map that came up in a room full of people doing exactly the same thing. Now, 12 years later, Counter-Strike is coming to consoles in the form of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, a PSN/XBLA/Steam downloadable game. Read the full story

Portal 2 DLC Announced

You know how I feel about Portal 2. It’s the only game I’ve given a perfect score (and may, in fact, be the only game that we, as a whole, have given a perfect score to, though some others have come tantalizingly close). The only imperfect thing about it is that there weren’t more test chambers, gameplay modes, or leaderboards. If ONLY there were some way to add those features post-release…wait, what? DLC for Portal 2 has been announced? Read the full story

Review: Section 8: Prejudice (XBLA)

I’m generally not a fan of XBLA shooters. I’m generally even less a fan of XBLA shooters that poorly attempt to emulate the gameplay or design of full price retail release shooters. With those particular prejudices (hurr-hurr, see what I did there?) already in place, it would seem that I would be an odd fit to review Section 8: Prejudice, a first-person shooter based on a full price retail release shooter but released as an XBLA shooter. Fortunately, Section 8: Prejudice doesn’t fall into the category of a “poor attempt.” It is, in fact, an excellent example of a great XBLA game. Read the full story

Review: Portal 2 (360)

I spent the latter half of this past Saturday humming random bars from Jonathan Coulton’s brilliantly written ending credits song for the original Portal, Still Alive (We do what we must, because we can…)* After a handful of bars, my wife turned to me and asked, with more than a hint of exasperation, “Am I going to have to listen to you humming that all weekend?” I regretfully informed her that, in the words of the Magic 8-ball, all signs pointed to yes, and apologized before breaking into a particularly stunning rendition (if I do say so myself) of the song from the beginning. Why was I in such rare form this weekend? Portal 2 was in my 360, and my controller was in my hands. Read the full story

The PS3 is Your Portal to Steam

Not only is that a rather clever headline, but it’s the truth. The PS3 is the first console to have Steam support, Portal 2 is how you get it, and we have the details here.

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!
