I have a love/hate relationship with JRPGs. I cannot tell you how much I adored growing up with Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, all the SNES Final Fantasies, Lufia and so on. I mean, this was a cornerstone of my childhood. But, there comes a time when we realize that those games (old-school Final Fantasy games especially) cater to a market that seems to despise itself. Lately, in the world of RPGs, a particular name keeps coming up, Ys. Is it “Yeez” or “Whys” or “Yeece”?, I hadn’t even heard of Ys (the last one is correct) until Ys: The Ark of Napishtim, and I hated that game. Well, hate can be a strong word, but, let’s just say I had the PSP version. The game was plagued by long load times and plenty of other issues that just destroyed the otherwise AWESOME game. I always meant to go back and play it on the PS2, but with countless other games I have yet to play, I just never got around to it. Then, quite recently, I read about Ys: 1 & 2 Chronicles (Ys 12c) from XSeed. I am totally a sucker for classic-style RPGs, and I can’t ever find enough titles that fit that “top down, action RPG” format, so I decided to check it out. (on another note, Kyle recently reviewed Ys Seven)

Way back in 1995, I was introduced to a new kind of carnage when Team 17 released their squiggly war-game, Worms. Now, this was a time when Mortal Kombat 3 was the baddest thing in the arcade, Alanis Morissette had her hand in her “ironic” pocket (obviously not realizing the difference between a coincidence and true irony), and the whole world was obsessed with the trial of O.J. Simpson (I never cared; Nintendo was more entertaining). We were hearing that violence, no matter the source, would corrupt us. That freezing a person who disagrees with you, and then shattering them into a thousand pieces, is just not an appropriate coping mechanism… Blah, blah, blah.
I was still a hard core SNES/Gameboy player, and had barely begun using my computer as a source for games. A few lunch table friends of mine were always showing me fantastic games: Bolo, Dark Castle, Lemmings, Hexen; I was fascinated by them all! PC games were an entirely different experience from console gaming, and Worms was to be no exception! Read the full story

Ever since we have had gadgets, people have been finding alternate ways to use them, often unintended by the manufacturer. Rooted Androids, jailbroken iPhones, custom Firmwares for the PSP; I have even seen homemade NES games and flash carts for playing them on the original Nintendo. Most of these modifications are innocent, such as a rooted Android, thus giving a user full access to their device. At first that seems reasonable enough - allowing you to make your device do what you want, why not? But often people make mischief, and ruin a good thing with bad intentions.
Console modding may very well become a criminal offense in the near future. This last Tuesday, a trial began in Southern California that could begin the creation of a much larger definition as to what a person is legally allowed to do with the products they buy. Read the full story
