Square (now a part of Square Enix) was responsible for some of the greatest JRPGs (and, some may argue, RPGs in general) that have ever graced our consoles. Having found both critical and commercial success across a variety of titles including Final Fantasy, Xenogears, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and more, there is no denying that Square knew what they were doing, and did it well. Arguably one of their most worthwhile efforts (read as: ONE of their most worthwhile efforts, not necessarily their MOST worthwhile effort) was the sequel to their critically acclaimed Chrono Trigger: a PSX game called Chrono Cross. The year is 1997. It’s a dark time to be a frog. The traffic is relentless and there are crocodiles and sentient lawn mowers everywhere. One wrong move and I could become a chew toy. I make my way quickly across the road, weaving in and out of traffic. When the Wii came out, one of the things I was excited about more than anything else (except for the ability to play Twilight Princess) was the Virtual Console. I had always dreamed of playing the games that I missed out on in my childhood, and the Virtual Console was going to help me rectify my mistakes. I could now play Super Metroid, Paper Mario, Yoshi’s Story, Super Mario 64 (before hate comments start flowing in, I had a PlayStation growing up) and other classics. I was beyond excited, although the fact that it took almost three years to release The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is somewhat unforgivable. I quickly downloaded several gems to add to my collection, and I became content. Then when I heard that the 3DS was going to have its own Virtual Console for Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, I was ecstatic. Everyone has their own opinion about what video games are the best that have ever graced a console. What makes this top ten list different and totally unique is that my opinion is, in fact, the correct opinion, whereas the opinions of the past are incorrect and undeniably inferior. This morning I read an article from the Wall Street Journal by author Kay Hymowitz entitled “Where Have The Good Men Gone?” Usually, I enjoy a rant against my gender, but reading what Hymowitz wrote made me unbelievably furious. The piece, linked below, is simply an assault on gamers and “nerds,” one that trivializes our medium and uses it to generalize men in a way that is unfair. It ignores an entire generation’s ideals as a whole, while trying to revitalize that the antiquated concept of the nuclear family is the only respectable path to follow for adults. Ever since we have had gadgets, people have been finding alternate ways to use them, often unintended by the manufacturer.  Rooted Androids, jailbroken iPhones, custom Firmwares for the PSP; I have even seen homemade NES games and flash carts for playing them on the original Nintendo.  Most of these modifications are innocent, such as a rooted Android, thus giving a user full access to their device.  At first that seems reasonable enough - allowing you to make your device do what you want, why not?  But often people make mischief, and ruin a good thing with bad intentions.

Console modding may very well become a criminal offense in the near future. This last Tuesday, a trial began in Southern California that could begin the creation of a much larger definition as to what a person is legally allowed to do with the products they buy. Read the full story
