Downloadable Content (DLC) has been a total game-changer this generation for consoles. From PC-like expansions, to map packs, we’ve seen just about every type of digital good sold either on Xbox Live Marketplace or the PSN Store. Under all the glitter and gold of really great DLC, is a very dark world. Something much worse than the nickel and dime DLC trick (I’m looking at you Guitar Hero and Rock Band), I speak of DLC that’s delivered on the game disc. Is this practice ever acceptable, or is this just another way to make gamers pay twice over for content they already own?

Looks like DLC passes might be the wave of the future. First Rockstar’s L.A. Noire, now Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat (you can read my review on the game here) is using this business model to sell DLC. The way it works is you buy the pass for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15 Bucks), and it gives you future DLC at a discounted rate. Without the pass, Skarlet, Rain, Kenshi, and a yet to be announced kombatant will cost you 400 Microsoft Points ($5 bucks) a piece. Each warrior will include their own Compatibility Pack (these are free to download for those who do not purchase the DLC), which will include two classic skins. The Season Pass is exclusive to Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Read the full story

April 25th: Some people may or may not know this, but reviewers for Marooner’s Rock typically have to buy the games we review. Occasionally we might get lucky, but for most games I post about, I have to spend my hard earned money on. I like to think that by spending my money, I can help other people spend theirs more wisely. When the games are great, it makes it more than worth it. When they are bad, I just have to hope that I save others from making a terrible purchase. However, with full time jobs, school and lives, it makes it hard for all of us to get them out in a timely fashion. That, and I’m professionally lazy at times. Yet, for the first time I’m prevented from doing my full review because of an enigma. Read the full story

The people at Guinness have a lot of free time and like to count things. Somehow they have turned this into a career. Today we look at the things they have counted in relation to Mortal Kombat, a game series which, surprise surprise, has a new installment coming out next Tuesday. God I love being topical.

The fourth episode of Marooners’ Talk features our new numbering system where the episode number actually matches the number of episodes! I know, I know, we’re bucking our system, throwing your world on its head, shattering everything you once believed to be true. Frankly, we got tired of explaining that Episode 2 was actually our third episode, etc.
