Halo Anniversary Gets Terminals

November 15th can’t come fast enough for us Halo fans. Almost like Master Chief himself was having a homecoming celebration from being lost in space, the original badass comes to the Xbox 360. It’s a tall order to fill, but the new Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary looks absolutely stunning. It’s amazing what a new coat of paint can do for a game, while releasing an HD remake is certainly not ground breaking in any way, it is extremely nice fan service. Pay attention kids, this is your father’s Halo… Just prettier.

E3 2011: Prey 2

Prey 2 is not Prey. It became clear at the Bethesda E3 Prey 2 screening that the portal and gravity mechanics that made up most of the core gameplay of Prey were not returning for the sequel. Instead, we’re given an open world, mission based sandbox shooter. In this spiritual sequel, you are no longer the hunted, like you were in Prey. Prey 2 presents a more empowered character, putting you in the role of the hunter. Read the full story

Resistance vs Halo; Why Nathan Hale Always Wins

I stopped by the store today to pick up a copy of the Resistance 3 demo for the wonderfully  low price of 18 bucks. They even threw in a copy of the film Battle: Los Angles, which was a nice perk. After finishing my third run through the demo, I came to a realization. In the battle for alien themed, console specific series, Resistance is far and away better than the often trumped up Halo. And as a public service, I’ve gathered up a few of the reasons why. Read the full story

E3 2011: Microsoft Trying to Keep Mascot Alive with Halo 4?

Microsoft announced “Halo 4″ at their press conference June 6 at E3, nearly nine months after “Halo: Reach” launched on the 360. The minute-and-a-half trailer left more questions than answers themselves. Among those questions one in particular begs to be asked: is Microsoft trying to salvage their first real mascot from the figurative grave?

E3 2011: Will the Wii U Bring Traditional Gamers Back?

Nintendo did their thing, a new console was shown and my body was ready for it. Was yours? What did you think about what Nintendo is dishing out? More importantly, does this newest development make you want to sink some money into Nintendo once again?

Discuss: Overwhelming Lack of Local Split-Screen in Online Multiplayer

I am both blessed and cursed with a wife who enjoys video games as much as I do. I am blessed, because she is my enabler. I don’t have to justify buying video games, consoles, or other electronics to her, because she understands the compulsion, and revels in it. I am cursed, because we only have one gaming setup, which means that we must learn to share time with our games. As only children, sharing was never that big of an issue growing up, so you can imagine how difficult it is when we’re nearing 30. Read the full story

Sick of Seeing Numbers

They’re everywhere. Resident Evil 5, Saw 7, and Shock Value 2. When is enough, enough? When will the entertainment industry stop recycling the same things over and over again? As customers, we deserve better.

Halo + Inception = WIN

After participating in the multi-player beta for Halo: Reach, I wanted nothing with the game. Now, thanks to the song “Mind Heist” from the Inception trailers, and the awesomeness of Transcendence Films, I want to play Reach right this second. Read the full story

Happy Bungie Day!

Today, for all you Halo fans, is Bungie Day. The creators of the Halo series, Bungie, have an affinity for the number 7. Since today is 7/7/09 that makes it Bungie Day!

If you own Halo 3 and have an Xbox Live account, you can go into the special playlist “Bungie vs. The World” so that you can be matched up with some of the Bungie staff. If you win the round with them, you will be awarded Recon armor. They even have a Scoreboard going where you can track how the games are going.

Typically on special days, presents are given… right? RIGHT! Bungie has gifted us with images of 3 upcoming maps that will be on Halo: ODST. If you ever played Halo 2, most of you will be familiar with the new map Heretic. It’s an updated version of Midship, and if you ever played on Midship you will remember all of the strategies you and your team can execute to own your opponents.

The next map is Citadel, a long abandoned Forerunner stronghold. It’s a small, symmetrical map and offers little safety for players looking to hide out and camp. Citadel’s tight quarters force you and your team to really work together, keeping up constant communication, and keeping an eye out. Citadel will also force players who are used to long range battles, especially with the sniper, to change up their tactics and adjust to close combat tactics.

The third, and final map, Bungie showed today was Longshore. It’s located at Old Mombasa and used to be a port. It’s great for large scale combat but can be used for smaller battles. Longshore appears to be a cluster of industrial buildings and will feature elevated walks as well as open areas. Longshore seems like the type of map where you can come up with many diverse strategies ranging from long range to close.

Hopefully the images of the new maps have you all excited. I know I am, and I can’t wait until Halo: ODST is released. As more information is given, we will be sure to update you all!

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!
